Migraines

Migraines can make your life miserable.

Usually they are caused by something you are eating which is why you must pay close attention to what you are eating. It can be different things for different people. You must keep a diary of what you have eaten prior to getting one of your headaches.

Typically these headaches are on one side. They throb. They last for hours. Usually the only thing that makes them go away is sleep and something like Excedrin migraine. Of course there will be variations. There are no hard and fast rules with regard to migraine. Some people also become nauseated when they get their migraines. Others will see spots in front of their eyes.

Girls who are going through menstruation also get migraines. This has to do with the changing hormones in the body.

Migraines tend to run in families. For example, everyone in my family, my mom, my two sisters and myself have migraines. There are different triggers for each one of us.

Fortunately, in today’s age, there are many medicines that we can try to alleviate migraines.

We doctors also recommend that you avoid food that may be causing the migraine headaches.

Migraines are headaches that usually persist hours to days.  They are usually triggered by foods; and which foods trigger a migraine vary from person to person.  Of course, other factors such as stress may also contribute to the formation of a migraine.

How do you know when you have a migraine?  You know it when you get it.  It is a severe throbbing headache usually localized to one side of the head.  Of course, in kids, the migraines can be on both sides of the head.  Some people see spots in front of their eyes.  Others get nauseated.

Potential contributors to migraine headache formation

1.  Psychological stress

2.  Physical pain in the body from another source

3.  Improper eating resulting in low blood sugar

4.  Drinking too much caffeine

For example, I have noticed that I am more likely to get a migraine after a busy day at the office or when I have drunk too many caffeinated soft drinks.  Also, if I drink a caffeinated soft drink and eat a chocolate bar at he same time, I am more likely to get a migraine.  Of course, your body will react differently than my body and will react differenty over time as you get older.  For example, years ago, onions gave me migraines, but not any more.  The key thing for you to do is write when down when you get a migraine and what you ate prior to the migraine’s onset.  Only by keeping records will you be able to make some conclusions.

Treatment

The best treatment for migraines is to prevent them.  You prevent them by trying to figure out what caused them.

1.  Decrease stress

2.  Get rid of the foods you think are causing the migraine

3.  Eat a proper, balanced  diet

What works best for me is Excedrin Migraine.  It has a combination of caffeine, acetominophen, and aspirin.  This would seem odd being that I just told you that caffeine helps contribute to my migraine.  Do not take the Excedrin Migraine if you and your child have a fever as the Excedrin Migraine contains aspirin.

Sleep is also important.
